Hi, a few lines here concerning a few protocols in the US military:
    a) unless things have changed radically since I got out. Patients never salute and NEVER left handed and NEVER seated. Military regs. If it was otherwise nothing would get done in a hospital nor would any patients get any rest, as the staff, ie: doctors, nurses-RN and above, are all officers. If a patient has a profile change either temporary or permanent all relevant information is address on that form and a copy is given to the patient including any relief of duties, or such including not having to do things like salute, shave, etc…
    b) Court Martial come after Board of Inquiry. Personnel involved can be arrested or restricted to base if need and such. But Court Martial happen only after the inquiry ascertains the what, who, why, and wherefore of those involved and who will be, pardon the expression, hauled up by the short hairs.
    c) Arti(Archie term used by British Armed Forces)- Artillery
Fire Mission- when you are actually firing the weapons
    F.O. – Forward Observer
F.A.C.-Forward Air Controller, Air Force’s version of the F.O. Fire Missions can be called in by either as required and vise a verse a. I had a friend of mine who was a Army F.O. in the delta during Vietnam. Things got so hot n heavy at one time during his tour that he was calling in ON his fire base, center +100yds, fire support from firebase on either side of him, but also USAF (not ARVN) air strikes and off-shore US Naval fire support to keep from being over run. I can not go on any further details, but they did survive the night – barely.
    Fire Base-where the weapons are.
Air Strike-same as a fire mission but from the air.
    Ranks in US Army:
Enlisted-basically all non commission personnel, including sergeants. From Private(E1) to Chief Master Sargent of the Army(E9)(a rather special position).
Warrant Officers-they are an enigma so to speak; they are not officers, but neither are they enlisted. They fly the helicopters. There are four levels of warrant and are called “mister”.They are saluted by enlisted and have to salute officers.
Officers-the commission ranks from 2nd Lt.(O1), single bronze(gold plated now)bar thru General of the Army(o?) FIVE silver stars, Eisenhower was the last if I remember right. Looks like you have a handle on this. One thing though, you can say almost anything to an officer, as long as you remember to ALWAYS say “Sir” before and “Sir” when you end that is an absolute; addressing him or her by their rank is a courtesy(personal note: I was US Air Force and this is a lot to remember so please check and make sure that I didn’t make any major faux pauxs.)
I really didn’t mean to drop this much on you all at once, but was up and thinking at the time so figured that I’d better while I could.
I would also like to say “thank you” the effort that you put into these really does show your love of writing. Also I say thank you for those who may have read them but can not say so as they might be active military and would be come down hard on if they did, as you noted in your rant (not, more like the truth finally being said) “you can disagree with him, just not in public”. That is unfortunately even more true to those who serve to defend America. Just recently a reserve staff Sargent who had posed for Playboy was reduced to senior airman and removed from active duty. She has submitted paper work for discharge, and hopes that she will get an honorable. The last lady who did something like this only receive a general discharge. Hope she gets a honorable, but…
I best close here now as words are running together, please keep writing.

Thank you for all this information. I’m sorry my response doesn’t come before now but I wasn’t aware of the comment before.

It’s called poetic license, really…but I -am- grateful for all the information. Oh, and I also saw the suggestion for ‘RAW’. I just might choose to use that. It’s very catchy.
